I remember when I first heard this album. I'd been shopping in a store that sold cheaply made blue jeans, (and found nothing I wanted to wear) but there was a record rack and this album was on it. The cover looked exciting so I bought it without hearing any of the tracks. At that time, I was pretty naïve about music, but I'd liked most of what I'd heard of Jefferson Airplane, so I thought I couldn't go far wrong. Then I took it home, played it, and was totally blown away. I had never heard anything like it before, and I loved it from the first second. To those who are too young to remember, President Nixon had just ended the Vietnam war, opened China to world trade, ended the draft, then came home and stabbed the whole country in the back. One song went, "Is that grey man sane? No color, no name." Well, we new what they meant. The name was Richard, and he was sane, all right, just totally ruthless and obsessed with money and power. We all had hope for a great future of trade and friendship with China (This was a fifteen years before Tiananmen square), but we were totally disgusted with what was happening here at home. We were wishing that we could "all fly away" and "Climb through time tomorrow", leaving the whole sordid mess behind us. This album seemed to be offering us the chance to do exactly that, if only for the few minutes that the music was playing. My favorite line of the whole album came in the song, Hyperspace. It goes "I never knew there were corners in time till I was told to go stand in one."The ideas expressed in this album still hold true today. We still see politicians willing to stab the whole country in the back for a handful of silver. The oily men still roll their tongues for their own free ride and the children still have to move on through a world polluted by petroleum byproducts. This is an album for all time, and the music is mind-blowing.
